Passive fireproofing in buildings is a requirement under the Building Code of Australia and is achieved by implementing a number of different solutions. Based on a number of factors such as the duration of fire resistance, aesthetic requirements etc. specific solutions are available for the different elements in a building.
Structural Steel (Beams and Columns)
The are three options available for protecting structural steel. Depending on the duration of fire protection required , the position of the structural member in the building and the aesthetic requirements for the member particular options are selected. Monospray has teams who are highly experienced in all these products.
Fire Spray
Structural members are coated with a vermiculite based fire spray. This is a very cost effective solution to protecting structural steel members in a building providing up to four hours of fire protection.
The thickness of spray applied using a pressurised gun is linked to the duration of fire protection required.
Spraying is suitable to coat difficult to reach areas and can be applied for both internal and external areas. As the finish is textured, for exposed areas additional finishing may be required. If the spray is used in areas encountering traffic, a hardener coat may have to be applied to prevent damage. Fire Boards
Specifically manufactured fire boards can provide up to 4 hours of protection and can be used both internally and externally in buildings. These boards are cut to size and installed around the structural members in a building.
Fire boards provide a finish which can be further enhanced to provide the required internal or external finish. Additional information on the materials used is provided in the technical data sheets listed below.
Fire Paint
Intumescent fire paint is a very specialised product which is applied to specially primed structural steel. In case of a fire, this paint expands to form a protective barrier around the steel member. Fire paint can provide up to a two hour protection. It is applied in a number of coats to achieve the specific thickness needed to provide the required duration of fire protection .
Monospray offers customers the option of having the intumescent coating applied either On-site or Off-site. The Off-Site application is undertaken either at the steel fabricator’s premises or at our facility. Using this approach ensures a high quality uniform finish. As the work is carried our Off-site a solvent based intumescent coating may be used. Solvent based intumescent coatings offer a higher quality of finish that the water based equivalents.
Fire paint can be applied both internally or externally in buildings and can have a decorative coat of paint applied over it. Additional information on the materials used is provided in the technical data sheets listed below.
