Riser Shafts & Penetrations
In case of a fire in a building containing the spread of the fire, smoke and fumes is essential to protect lives and assets. Generally all essential services in buildings are located in vertical riser shafts.
Buildings also generally segregated into sections with a solid fire barrier between these sections. Services that are provided to these sections are located in penetrations made through fire barriers. To prevent the spread of flames, smoke and fumes all penetrations in riser shafts and in fire barriers need to be sealed. The are a number of fireproofing products that are available to seal penetrations. The choice of which product is used is made based on a number of factors such as size and location of the penetration, need for future access or expansion etc.
Protecting cables and mechanical services is required to maintain essential services in a building. Air-conditioning and ventilation ducts need to be protected to prevent the propagation of flames, fumes and smoke in buildings. The main options for protecting these assets are Vermiculite Fire Spray, Fire Blankets or Fire rated boards. The choice is made depending on the position of the ductwork and cable trays, the duration of fire protection required and the complexity associated with the installation work.
The team at Monospray has undertaken extensive installations of passive fire protection systems for riser shafts and penetrations in buildings. We also supply the material required for installation by tradespersons.
Fire Collars
A variety of fire collars are available for different applications. In general these collars are placed around pipes or conduits in buildings. These collars provide up to four hours of fire protection.
► Cast-In Collars— These are available in 40mm—150mm diameter and are installed during the construction phase.
► Retrofit Collars— As the name suggests these collars are retrofitted around pipes or conduits in existing buildings. They are available in 40mm—300mm diameter
► UniCollar—This is a collar that is available as a continuous strip and is cut to the necessary length to install around pipes or conduits.
► Wall Collars—This is a collar installed around pipes or conduits passing through penetrations made in fire barrier walls. These are available in 40mm—150mm diameter and are installed either during the construction phase or in existing buildings.
► Conduit Collars—These are generally used to retrofit around 32mm conduits in either floor slab or wall penetrations.
► In floor waste collars—These collars are used to prevent passage of smoke and fumes around waste pipes. They are available in a variety of sizes from 50mm —100mm diameter and are available for installation during the construction phase or to be retrofitted in existing buildings.
Fire Pillows
Fire pillows are installed around cables and non-combustible pipes which go through penetrations in walls or floor slabs. Fire pillows are a versatile product which can be removed to permit additional services to be installed through existing penetrations. They come in a variety of sizes and generally offer up to three hours of fire protection.
Fire Mortar
Fire mortar is specially formulated to seal penetrations is floor slabs and walls around services that have been installed or to seal areas where services have been removed. The cement based compound can be towelled into the opening to provide a smooth finish with the slab or wall. This compound has a fire rating of up to four hours.
Foam Strips
The strips are specifically made with intumescent material bonded with foam and are used in expansion joints in a building. They provide up to four hours fire protection and are suitable for joints in both masonry and concrete walls or concrete floors.
Fire Sealants
Fire sealants are caulkable materials which are used to seal around services which pass through penetrations. They are used to close gaps between floor levels or in fire barrier walls. They provide up to four hours fire protection are installed either during the construction phase or in existing buildings.
